wind and solar power case study - zellers flamborough

Zellers
Flamborough Power Centre

Zellers' "green" store

Waterdown, ON

The new Zellers in Waterdown is planning to install two different renewable energy projects. The plan is to purchase and construct two wind turbines and install solar panels.

Components:

1. Two Skystream wind turbines, each standing 16 metres high and 3.7 metres in diameter. These small and compact turbines, made from Southwest Windpower of Flagstaff, Arizona, are composed of three blades. Each turbine will generate 1.8 kilowatts of energy. The Canadian cost for each windmill is $20 000, which includes the concrete foundation and tower.

At 1.8 kilowatts, each wind turbine will produce 1,800 watts, enough to light 18 100-watt bulbs in the store.

2. Solar panels. The solar panels will generate enough energy to power the recycling compactors and help light the store.

3. Low Voltage Lighting Control System

Among other environmental features, the store will have a white roof to reflect summer sun and a ventilation system that warms incoming fresh air with heated exhaust air.
