Event Description: Water Hour
Are you concerned about the coming water crisis? Here's an opportunity to help raise awareness and action in a big way. Water Hour, 8PM local time on June 11th, is a moment in time to tell the world how you feel about water, what it means to you, why it’s important. Water Hour takes this approach: we must leave fear and guilt behind, and get emotionally reconnected with water in our lives. It's about falling in love with water...all over again. Together, we are invited to send out a torrent of messages on behalf of water during the hour through social networks like Twitter, Facebook and Flickr. You can participate right now. Just go to www.waterhour.org and follow these steps:
Ready
Reconnect to your most amazing, touching, or hilarious experiences with water, and share your water moments on the website for a chance to win a beautiful framed print by photographer James Phillips.
Set
Submit your ideas for how to mark the hour and declare that you care on June 11th. Or vote for your favourites from those submitted by others.
Go!
Take part in the top voted ideas during Water Hour or express yourself in your own way – just be sure to share your action or message with the world through the Water Hour social networks.
Keep going!
Pack the most punch by declaring your commitment, large or small, on waterhour.org to protect water at home or in your community.

Event Description: Bees, butterflies, birds and bats are essential actors in our gardens, farms and wild areas. They are the pollinators that help co-produce fruit, vegetables, seeds and flowers. It is estimated that one out of every three bites should be attributed to a pollinator.
Honey bee and wild bee populations are declining globally. Gardeners like you are in a unique position can make a significant difference to these declines by providing pollinators with nesting and foraging habitat.

Features of the Rain Catcher 4000 Barrel
Rain Barrels sold at the 2009 and 2010 events have these features:
· Barrel-shaped heavy-duty plastic design with flat back to sit flush against house.
· Mosquito / debris screen.
· 205 litre capacity, approximately 32” high.
· Convenient hose attachment with on/off valve for easy dispensing into watering can.
· Overflow valve with hose to direct overflow rain away from house.
· Approximately 24” diameter - fits in average vehicle (such as Toyota Corolla back seat).
· Weighs approximately 10 lbs empty.
· Minimum assembly required (attach overflow hose and dispensing hose using simple clamps provided).
How to Adapt Your Downspout (to flow into the rain barrel)
1.Cut off lower portion of the downspout (above the elbow).
2.Re-attach downspout elbow a few inches above the top of the rain barrel.
Residents who purchased a rain barrel at a sales event, are responsible for adapting their own downspout. Downspout adjustment instructions were included with the rain barrels.
Winterizing Your Rain Barrel
To avoid damage to your rain barrel, be sure to winterize it before first frost. The manufacturer’s information included with rain barrels purchased through Hamilton’s 2009 and 2010 program recommends:
· Drain the rain barrel and all hoses completely.
· Hoses should be stored inside.
· Place the rain barrel upside down to avoid water freezing inside it and cracking the barrel.
If possible store the rain barrel upside down in the garage, another protected area, or cover the upside down rain barrel to protect it from the elements and avoid the possibility of it blowing away during intense weather.
If it is inconvenient to leave the downspout modified (shortened) while your rain barrel is upside down for winter, you may wish to install a flexible downspout extension, available at most hardware stores.

In recognition of the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, the Workers Arts &
Heritage Centre is inviting Hamilton residents to become “Garbage
Artists” and contribute their time and/or recyclable waste to creating a
sculpture of Hamilton’s most famous natural landmark.
Entitled, Garbage Escarpment, the sculpture is meant to help raise
awareness of the amounts of waste that we produce, while also mapping what
our refuse says about us as people and as a city.
The project also offers the opportunity for Hamiltonians to get together
and celebrate their artistic accomplishment. On April 23rd, 2010 from 7pm
-10pm the WAHC will host a public completion and unveiling of Garbage
Escarpment as part of the final Labour Lounge program of the 2009-2010
season.
The event will also feature the premier of the Recycled Vinyl musical
program, an opportunity for local record enthusiasts to play their
favourite, old, obscure or just plain weird records. WAHC will provide
turntables and speakers.
How to Participate:
DONATE: Bring donations of trash to the WAHC from April 1st – April 23rd,
2010
DO NOT BRING IN: Organic waste, liquid or chemical waste, medical waste,
hazardous waste.
Workers Arts & Heritage Centre. 51 Stuart St. Hamilton, ON. Tuesday to Saturday 10am -4pm
ATTEND: Come to the completion/unveiling ceremony at WAHC on April 23rd at
7pm and show your support for local arts & culture.
VOLUNTEER: Become a garbage artist! Garbage Artists will be needed to sort
trash and help put the finishing touches on the Garbage Escarpment on the
day of the event.
DJ: Bring in your old, obscure, bizarre and fun vinyl LPs and play them for
us as part of our Recycled Vinyl open turntables program.
Participants will receive a free WAHC button and acknowledgement as a
participating artist on WAHC’s website and during the exhibition of
Garbage Escarpment
